Frequently Asked Questions-

Question- How many opportunities will I have to conduct during the workshop?
Answer- Each student in the Emerging Artist program conducts in one session each of the
String, Wind, Chamber Ensemble, Opera and Orchestra ensemble sessions, and each
student also gets an opportunity to conduct in the Sunday Showcase.
Each Student in the Discovery Program conducts one full orchestra work, one chamber
ensemble work and one work with piano reduction played by Neal Kurz.

Question- Do I have to prepare all the movements of all the pieces on the repertoire list?
Answer- It's your nickel, but we strongly encourage all students to prepare all the
movements of all works in
both programs, as you'll get more out of watching your
colleagues if you know the challenges of all the repertoire, and you will only benefit in the
long-run from  knowing all the repertoire.

Question- Can I pick the movements of works that I want to conduct?
Answer- Whenever possible, the faculty like to let students conduct the selections they
want to. However, the faculty may feel it is in the student's best interest to conduct an
excerpt other than the one that was their "first choice" for pedagogical reasons. Also, the
faculty reserve the right to request specific movements in order to keep soloists fresh,
maintain balance and interest for the players or to make sure all the repertoire that needs
to be covered before the Sunday Showcase gets played.

Question- Why haven't I gotten anything in the mail from the workshop?
Answer- The Rose City International Conductor's Workshop is a tree-friendly organization. All
our official communications, including acceptance letters, status updates and so on, are
sent via email only. You won't receive anything on paper from us unless you specifically
request it.

Question- How does the schedule work?
Answer- Here is the 2010 Schedule   We typically split the class into two sections who rotate
through the repertoire sessions. We expect
all students to attend all the sessions for both the
Discovery and Emerging Artist programs.

Question-  Can my friends and family come to see me conduct?
Answer- The Sunday Showcase Mock Concert is free and open, and we encourage
students to invite friends and family This event is not a formal concert- we don't advertise it,
but it gives students a chance to test what they have learned during the week and
possibly get some good video of their work. All of our teaching sessions are open to public
observers- audience admission is $10/session and tickets are available at the door.

Question- What is the dress for the Sunday Showcase Mock Concert?
Answer- The orchestra wears contemporary black (black trousers/skirts and black dress
shirts, no jackets), you can wear what you think is appropriate.

Question- Where can I get the scores? Do I have to buy the scores or can I borrow them
from a library? Can I use photocopied scores?
Answer- Unfortunately, the RCICW does not have the resources to assist students in finding
their scores beyond any advice offered on the website. Scores to all of our repertoire are
commercially available at the time the repertoire is announced, although some works do
come in and out of print. Students are welcome to use library copies of scores for the
workshop- you are not required to purchase your own scores. Editions listed on the website
are advisory- if you have a different edition of one of the scheduled works you would like
to use, you may do so, but we strongly encourage you to check the compatibility of your
edition against the one announced on the website.
It is each student's responsibility to be sure that any photocopied materials they use are in
compliance with "Fair Use" guidelines of relevant copyright laws. The workshop is not
responsible for student compliance with copyright law and does not inspect scores of
students- using photocopies is entirely the choice of the student to make based on their
understanding of the law.

Question- What format will I get the video of my conducting in?
Answer- All students will get un-encrypted mpeg files on disc of their work in all the
teaching sessions and the final concert.

Question- Can I arrange to have my sessions recorded onto Mini DV or another format?
Answer- Students may bring and use their own cameras if they have paid the Video Fee,
but we are unable to provide facilities for recording onto other formats besides DVD. We
are also unable to provide facilities for connecting student's cameras to the RCICW audio
console.

Question- Can I choose what I will conduct in the Sunday Showcase?
Answer- Students are very welcome to submit repertoire requests for the concert, but
concert assignments will be made by the faculty based on a balance of factors including
the strengths and weaknesses of the students, needs of the soloists, who has conducted
what in the teaching sessions and the best interests of the audience and orchestra
musicians.

Question- When do I find out what I am conducting in the final mock concert?
Answer- We typically inform students of their assignments on Friday afternoon, but
announcements may be made earlier or later if circumstances dictate it.

Question- Do Discovery Program students conduct on the final mock concert?
Answer- No, only students in the Emerging Artist program conduct on the final concert.

Question- Can I get a ride from the airport?
Answer- No, unfortunately the workshop does not have the resources to provide
transportation. Students are encouraged to join the RCICW Facebook group- the forum
there provides a venue for students to arrange shared transportation and housing, as well
as for general networking.

Question- Can I pay my tuition and fees using my credit card?
Answer- Yes, PayPal accepts most major credit cards, so you can use your credit card by
clicking on any of the PayPal buttons on the
Payments page of the website.

Question- I've had something come up and can no longer attend-- Can I get a refund of
my money?
Answer- Please consult the Terms and Conditions, which cover all our policies for dealing
with refund requests.
